Maryamu Idris Appointed as Nigeria’s National Representative to OPEC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the appointment of Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The announcement was made in an official statement released by the company on Thursday.

“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC),” the statement read.

In her new role, Idris will serve as Nigeria’s principal technical representative within OPEC.

She will participate in policy discussions and technical meetings, particularly as a member of the Economic Commission Board (ECB)—a key advisory body within the organization.

NNPCL said Idris will also work closely with the OPEC Governor and national institutions such as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, ensuring that Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented at the international level.

Idris will continue to serve as Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited alongside her OPEC responsibilities.

She holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics from the University of Abuja, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.

With over two decades of experience in the oil and gas sector, Idris began her career in 1999 at the Bureau of Public Enterprises, before joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) as a Petroleum Economist and Trust Fund Adviser between 2006 and 2009.

She joined NNPC in the Crude Oil Marketing Division and held several leadership roles including Supervisor of Market Research, Deputy Manager of Pricing and Performance, and Manager of Pricing and Valuation.

At NNPC Trading Limited, Idris served as Executive Director of Crude and Condensate (2022–2024), Executive Director of Planning and Commercial (2024–2025), and was appointed Managing Director in April 2025.
