The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), led by Comrade Uchenna Madu, has declared Saturday, May 30, 2026, as Biafra Day and called for a voluntary sit-at-home across the South-East and other areas it describes as Biafraland.
The announcement was made on Thursday, May 14, 2026, in a statement issued by the group’s National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel.
MASSOB said the date marks the 59th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Biafra by the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu on May 30, 1967.
It stated that the day will be observed as a period of sober reflection, with markets, schools, banks, motor parks, and other public and private business activities expected to remain closed between 6 am and 4 pm.

The group described the planned shutdown as a symbolic gesture of honor and remembrance for those it says were affected by the Nigerian civil war that followed the 1967 declaration.
MASSOB stressed that the sit-at-home directive is voluntary and not subject to enforcement, adding that no form of intimidation or coercion will be used to compel compliance.
It also stated that there will be no protests or street demonstrations during the observance.
The organisation said the commemoration remains part of its non-violent campaign for self-determination, while reiterating its demand for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
MASSOB maintained that its pursuit of the actualization of Biafra remains “unstoppable,” insisting it will continue its agitation through peaceful and civil means.
