The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier who was fatally attacked by a mentally unstable individual while on security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, on Tuesday, the Army said the incident occurred on 16 November 2025 at about 4:00 p.m.
The soldier, who was part of an internal security deployment, had attempted to de-escalate a chaotic situation when the attacker suddenly struck him on the head with a heavy log.
According to the Army, troops at the scene quickly intervened, neutralising the assailant and recovering the soldier’s weapon.
The injured personnel was immediately evacuated to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers of his unit in attendance.
The 81 Division extended its condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldier, praising his service and sacrifice to the nation.
The Division also announced that a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched.
The Army urged members of the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to security agencies, and avoid spreading unverified information about the incident.
“We appeal for responsible reporting as the investigation proceeds,” the statement added.
