Former England international James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, closing the chapter on a career that spanned more than 20 years in the Premier League.
The 40-year-old midfielder, widely recognised for his adaptability and dependability, had recently been out of contract after spending the last three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Milner leaves the game as the holder of the Premier League appearance record, a feat he achieved earlier this year, further cementing his reputation as one of the most enduring figures in English top-flight football.
His professional journey began at Leeds United before he went on to feature for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.
Over the course of his Premier League career, he amassed more than 600 appearances, earning a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable utility players.
At Manchester City, Milner enjoyed significant success, winning two Premier League titles. He later joined Liverpool, where he added another league crown and was part of the squad that secured the UEFA Champions League title in 2019.

In a statement released via social media on Monday, Milner looked back on his career and the memories he accumulated over the years.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
On the international stage, Milner represented England at two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups, earning praise throughout his career for his discipline, leadership, and exceptional fitness levels.
His retirement brings to a close one of the most consistent and long-serving careers in Premier League history.
