Minority Caucus Demands Halt to Tax Reform Implementation Amid “Unlawful Alteration” Scandal

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for an immediate freeze on the newly enacted tax reform laws. This urgent demand follows a growing controversy regarding the authenticity of the legal documents currently being implemented by the executive branch.

In a formal communication released on Monday, the 29th of December, 2025, Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, supported by the caucus’s principal officers, voiced a profound sense of alarm regarding the integrity of the legislative process.

The central issue involves claims that the tax statutes were surreptitiously changed after they had already undergone the constitutional process of passage by the National Assembly and received the signature of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The caucus noted that this discrepancy is a fundamental threat to the nation’s stability.

According to the group, these accusations: “…if proven, strike at the core of Nigeria’s legislative integrity, constitutional order and democratic governance.”

While the caucus admitted that tax reforms are naturally divisive, they argued that the current crisis is a matter of criminality rather than a difference in political opinion. They alleged that the version of the law that was gazetted and distributed to the public does not match the specific language approved by the lawmakers.

The situation was brought to a head during a recent plenary session of the House, resulting in the formation of a specialised investigative panel to determine how the documents were manipulated.

The Minority Caucus has vowed to provide unwavering support to the investigative committee, promising the Nigerian public that the “truth would be uncovered.”

In their official statement, they declared: “We want to assure Nigerians that the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives will stand with the entire House to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this illegality are exposed and the culprits brought to book in the interest of justice,” the statement read.

The caucus remains firm in its position that until the investigation is concluded and the legal text is verified, the implementation of these tax laws must be suspended to protect the rule of law.
