Omowunmi Adebanjo, widow of the late Afrobeats star Mohbad, has openly defied a family directive to stop using the singer’s surname, escalating an ongoing dispute over paternity and inheritance.
On Thursday, 13 November 2025, Wunmi posted on her Instagram story identifying herself as “Wunmi Aloba” and wrote:
“Please patronize Wunmi Aloba oo, Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of,” in what appeared to be a direct challenge to Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, and the family head, Omolayo Aloba.
The Aloba family had earlier declared that no statutory or customary marriage took place between Mohbad and Wunmi because the required Yoruba traditional rites, including payment of the bride price, were never completed.
They ordered her to stop using the Aloba surname and stated that any role she might play in Mohbad’s estate would depend on a court-ordered DNA test confirming the paternity of her son, Liam.

Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, died on 12 September 2023 at the age of 27, leaving behind a wave of grief and controversy within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
The ongoing dispute over his surname and estate highlights deepening legal and family tensions as appointed administrators continue to manage his royalties, bank holdings, and intellectual property.
Wunmi’s Instagram post suggests the rift between both sides is far from resolved, ensuring that the debate over Mohbad’s legacy and his son’s rightful place in it remains in the public spotlight.
