Molde FK Suspend Nigerian Midfielder Daniel Daga After Sexual Assault Indictment

Norwegian top-flight side Molde Fotballklubb have suspended Nigerian midfielder Daniel Daga following his formal indictment on a sexual assault charge in Norway.

The 18-year-old, a former Flying Eagles player, is accused of carrying out a sexual act without consent, an offence classified under Section 297 of the Norwegian Penal Code.

Molde FK disclosed that the alleged incident was reported to the police in late April 2025.

In a statement released on Friday, the club confirmed that the case is expected to be heard in March 2026 at the Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court.

Molde FK noted that both the player and the club have cooperated fully with Norwegian authorities since investigations began.

As a result of the indictment, Daga has been suspended from all team-related activities, including training and matchday involvement, until further notice.

The midfielder last appeared for Molde on November 24, featuring in a 2-1 away victory over Strømsgodset.

He made 15 appearances across all competitions during the season, scoring twice in the league.

Daga joined Molde FK in January from Nigerian club FC ONE Rocket on a three-year deal.

He has also represented Nigeria at youth level and featured at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in October, where the Flying Eagles were knocked out 4-0 by Argentina in the round of 16.

Following the end of the 2025 season, Molde said the player returned to Nigeria for a planned holiday, adding that arrangements are in place for his return to Norway ahead of the court proceedings.

Commenting on the development, Molde FK chairman Odd Ivar Moen described the situation as serious and emphasized the club’s duty to handle the matter responsibly.

“This is a grave case, and we take the indictment very seriously,” Moen said. “Such situations are demanding for all parties involved — the individuals concerned, the club, and the wider community.”

He added that the club has been in contact with the complainant’s legal representatives and acknowledged the emotional strain the case has caused.

“We want to proceed with respect and ensure a fair and proper process for everyone affected,” he said.

Daga’s legal representative, Astrid Bolstad, has denied the allegations on his behalf. While confirming that a sexual encounter occurred, she maintained that it was consensual.

“My client does not accept guilt and maintains that he has not committed any criminal offence,” Bolstad stated. “There are no allegations of violence or threats. He welcomes the opportunity for the case to be heard in court so he can clear his name.”

Bolstad also said the player was taken aback by the decision to pursue formal charges and described the situation as emotionally distressing for him.

The case remains pending as legal proceedings draw closer.
