Portuguese manager José Mourinho has confirmed that talks over a new contract with SL Benfica have been put on hold amid growing speculation linking him with a sensational return to Real Madrid.
Speaking on his future, Mourinho revealed that Benfica had submitted a fresh contract proposal earlier this week, but he asked the club to delay discussions until after the weekend.
“On Wednesday, Benfica’s new contract offer arrived. But my message to the club was: ‘Not now — thank you,’” Mourinho said.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Roma boss hinted that major developments regarding his next managerial destination could emerge in the coming days.
“On Sunday, we will see. Next week is important for my future. No one should ever worry about whether someone stays here or leaves because Benfica is and will be bigger than everyone,” he added.
Mourinho also refused to directly address questions surrounding Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, further fuelling reports of ongoing negotiations between both parties.

“I don’t comment on presidents, and especially not Florentino Pérez,” Mourinho stated.
The comments come amid widespread reports that discussions between Mourinho and Real Madrid have entered the final stages, with the Spanish giants reportedly considering the veteran tactician for a dramatic return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey trophy and a Spanish Super Cup during his time in the Spanish capital.
If completed, the move would mark one of the biggest managerial stories ahead of the new European football season, with fans already anticipating Mourinho’s possible return to one of Europe’s most successful clubs.
