Mutfwang Meets Security Chiefs, LG Chairmen Over Fresh Plateau Killings

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Wednesday, April 8, convened an expanded State Security Council meeting with heads of security agencies and chairmen of all 17 local government areas, as concerns grow over renewed violence in the state.

The meeting, held at the Government House in Jos, followed a wave of attacks that have reportedly claimed at least 50 lives across several communities within the past week.

Gyang Bere, the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, said the gathering formed part of coordinated efforts to address rising insecurity and reinforce peaceful coexistence.

He noted that discussions centred on reviewing the current security situation and mapping out strategies to prevent further attacks.

Speaking after the session, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, said the meeting provided an opportunity to assess recent incidents and improve coordination among security agencies.

He said, “His Excellency summoned this meeting to review the past week and enable us to plan effectively for the days ahead. The curfew has now been adjusted to run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and we have been directed to ensure strict compliance.”

The police chief warned that anyone violating the curfew would face prosecution. He added that existing restrictions on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations remain in force across affected areas.

Ewah also dismissed reports suggesting planned protests in the state, maintaining that the security situation remains stable.

He said, “The government is not siding with any faith. All decisions are aimed at ensuring peace. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no protests and no breakdown of law and order.”

Consequently, he called on residents to cooperate with security agencies by adhering to directives, stressing that collaboration among security operatives remains strong.

“We operate as one team, and I assure citizens that we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Plateau State, Hamisu Anani, said local councils are adopting tailored approaches to tackle insecurity. He said,

“Each local government will develop strategies based on its peculiarities. We are working closely with security chiefs, reviewing reports from the field, and strengthening collaboration to effectively tackle insecurity across the state.”

The high-level meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo, Special Adviser on Security and Commander of Operation Rainbow, General Gagji Shipi,  among other key stakeholders.
