The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has responded to the tragic incident that occurred at Yauni Hill, Zakka Ward, Safana Local Government Area in Katsina State on Saturday, February 15.
Reports indicated that an airstrike aimed at bandits mistakenly resulted in the deaths of a family of six and another individual.
In a statement released on Monday, February 17, the Director of Public Relations and Information for NAF, AVM Olusola Akinboyewa, said that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has ordered a “thorough investigation” into the incident.
Akinboyewa explained that the airstrike was launched in response to intelligence indicating a terrorist attack on a Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Katsina State Community Watch Corps personnel, during which bandits had killed two PMF personnel and four vigilantes.
He added that the bandits had taken refuge on Yauni Hill, and NAF air assets were deployed for an air interdiction mission. The targets were identified and engaged upon arrival.
The NAF spokesman expressed concern over the reports of civilian casualties, stating that the force remains committed to uncovering the truth.
While acknowledging the distressing nature of the allegations, he emphasized that they remain unverified until the investigation is completed.

“As a professional force dedicated to the protection of Nigeria and its people, the NAF operates under strict rules of engagement and adheres to internationally accepted standards,” Akinboyewa said.
He assured the public that NAF would take appropriate action based on the investigation’s findings.
He urged Nigerians to remain calm as the inquiry continues, reaffirming the NAF’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives.
