Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has confirmed the release of N1.6 billion for the settlement of gratuities owed to retired state civil servants for the year 2012.
The governor made this known in Lafia on Thursday, the 21st of August, 2025, during a ceremony where 100 electric vehicles and tricycles were handed out to young beneficiaries across the 13 local government areas.
The initiative, according to him, is aimed at promoting self-reliance and creating more business opportunities for youths.
Governor Sule recalled that his government had earlier completed the payment of gratuities for the period covering 1996 to 2011.
“This year, at the state level, we are also paying all the 2012, we will be paying them 100 per cent of their money amounting to N1.6 billion,” he stated.

He also revealed that the state would extend a financial intervention of N600 million to local government councils to support their efforts in clearing outstanding gratuities.
“For the retired civil servants, if you remember we started this payment of gratuity from the year 1996 to 2011, and they have been fully paid,” the governor explained.
Sule further warned the councils against the problem of overstaffing, which he identified as a major reason behind their financial struggles.
“Every year, the LGAs leave gratuity between N5 billion and N6 billion; there is no way they will be able to pay,” he remarked.
To address this, he called on the State House of Assembly to conduct an audit of all 13 councils to verify their staff records as part of legislative oversight.
