Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking his second change of political party in four months.
The defection was formally announced during the Senate’s plenary on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, after Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau read Onawo’s letter notifying the chamber of his decision.
In the letter, the lawmaker said his resignation from the ADC took effect on June 15, 2026, after extensive consultations with his constituents, political associates and other key stakeholders.

Onawo said he was leaving the party because its internal divisions and prolonged legal disputes had eroded the stability and cohesion required for him to effectively discharge his legislative duties and advance the interests of the people of Nasarawa South.
He expressed confidence that his new platform, the Allied Peoples Movement, would provide a more conducive environment to pursue the mandate entrusted to him by his constituents.
The latest move comes just months after Onawo left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ADC. On March 12, 2026, he was among nine senators who announced their defection to the ADC during a Senate plenary, citing their commitment to democratic governance and effective representation.
Onawo’s latest switch adds to the growing political realignments within the National Assembly as parties and elected officials continue to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
