Nasiru Gawuna, former deputy governor of Kano State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in 2023, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major realignment in the state’s politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gawuna received his ADC membership card on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at his Gawuna Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area.
The registration ceremony drew thousands of supporters and high-profile political figures, including former Kano State governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, immediate past deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo, and ADC state chairman Musa Ungogo.
After his registration, Gawuna expressed appreciation to party leaders and supporters, pledging his commitment to strengthening the ADC’s presence and influence in Kano State.

His defection comes shortly after he formally resigned from the APC.
In a letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to the APC ward chairman, Gawuna described his departure as personal and voluntary, thanking the party for the opportunities he had while serving under its platform.
Gawuna’s move reflects broader political realignments in Kano, where several prominent figures are repositioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Analysts say his switch to the ADC, alongside other key actors, could reshape political alliances and voter dynamics in the state.
