The Nigerian Navy is set to open a new operational base in Yauri, located in Kebbi State’s Yauri Local Government Area. The base aims to boost security on River Niger and across the broader Northwestern region.
A delegation from the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, shared the plan on Thursday, the 31st of July, 2025, during a visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who led the team, explained that the project is part of the Navy’s wider security approach. It focuses not only on coastal areas but also on inland waterways like the River Niger.
“River Niger, while a national asset supporting agriculture and energy, is increasingly being exploited by criminal elements for smuggling arms and other illicit activities,” Nwatu said.
He added that the river has become a hub for illegal operations and that placing a naval facility in Kebbi would strengthen existing security efforts, working in tandem with the naval base in Niger State.

Governor Idris welcomed the plan, calling it a much-needed step in light of growing security threats in southern Kebbi.
“We have never had a naval base in Kebbi. This development is commendable, especially with the need to secure River Niger, which our limited marine police cannot adequately cover,” he said.
He highlighted Kebbi’s proximity to Niger and Benin Republics as a key reason for the move and pledged state support. This includes offering temporary housing for naval personnel pending the construction of permanent facilities.
