NBA Slams Judge For Ordering Sowore’s Lawyer To Kneel

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned a Federal High Court judge’s directive requiring a lawyer to kneel during proceedings in a case involving activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, describing it as inconsistent with judicial norms and the dignity of the legal profession.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the NBA said the incident occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The exchange involved Justice Mohammed Umar and lead defence counsel Marshall Abubakar.

The association said the judge reportedly ordered Abubakar to step out of the Bar and kneel after raising his voice while questioning hearing schedules, and allegedly threatened him with committal for contempt.

The NBA described the action as unrecognized under Nigerian law and contrary to the standards expected of judges.

“Directing a legal practitioner, or any individual, to kneel in court has no legal basis and does not reflect the standards of judicial behaviour required on the Bench,” it said.

While acknowledging judges’ role in maintaining courtroom order, the NBA stressed that disciplinary powers must follow legal procedures and established judicial ethics. Allegations of contempt, it said, should be handled fairly and with respect for all parties’ rights.

The association also reminded lawyers of their duty to uphold professionalism, advocating firmly for clients while maintaining decorum and respect in court.

It urged all parties to exercise restraint and address grievances through proper institutional or disciplinary channels, adding that it would engage relevant authorities where necessary to safeguard the rule of law and ethical standards.
