NCAA Warns International Airlines Against Passenger Deportation Mid-Transit

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines over the growing number of complaints from passengers who are transported partway to their destinations, only to be sent back to Nigeria.

In a statement released on Thursday, Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, condemned the practice, highlighting the distress it causes passengers and the negative impact on Nigeria’s aviation industry.

“These actions, which involve refusal of boarding or denial of entry at transit points due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” Achimugu stated.

The NCAA emphasized that airlines bear the responsibility of informing passengers of potential entry restrictions before their journey begins.

Passengers should not be left stranded at intermediate stops, only to be deported back to Nigeria, the statement added.

Citing the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), the NCAA reiterated that airlines and their agents must provide travelers with accurate, up-to-date information regarding visa requirements and entry conditions before issuing tickets or allowing them to board.

To curb the issue, the NCAA has announced immediate enforcement measures against non-compliant airlines.

“Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed appropriate,” Achimugu warned.

He further urged airlines to uphold professionalism and ensure the welfare of Nigerian passengers, stressing that the NCAA expects full compliance to maintain the integrity of the country’s aviation sector.
