The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a set of measures designed to strengthen its internal governance, promote transparency, and entrench party supremacy as part of broader efforts to build a sustainable political institution.
The decisions were reached during the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and were made public in a statement issued on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
According to the statement, the party is focused on establishing a durable structure capable of outlasting individual interests while ensuring that elected officials remain accountable to the party hierarchy.
“The NDC is committed to building the party as a strong and enduring institution, with emphasis on party supremacy,” the statement said.
The party further stated that governments elected under its platform must maintain close consultation with party organs on key decisions.
“the programs, policies, and appointments (except personal staff) of all governments elected on the platform of the party must be made in consultation with the party structure.”
Reaffirming the principle of party supremacy, the NDC stressed that members are expected to place the party’s goals above personal ambitions.
“the party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.”
As part of efforts to improve coordination within the organization, the party directed all affiliated groups and non-governmental organizations linked to it to operate within the framework of the party structure.
“All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure,” the statement said.
The NEC also approved plans for a comprehensive Code of Conduct to guide party officials and candidates.
To facilitate this process, a committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser has been established to develop the necessary framework and operational guidelines.
In a move aimed at fostering unity within the party, the NDC announced the inauguration of a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging dissatisfied members and resolving internal grievances.
“A National Reconciliation Committee has been inaugurated to reconcile all aggrieved members of the party,” the statement noted.

The party emphasized that its long-term vision is to function as a lasting institution rather than a platform built around individual personalities or short-term political objectives.
“The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” the party stated.
The statement urged members and aspirants to remain dedicated to the party’s growth and place both the party and national interest above all other considerations.
“at all times, and for all candidates and aspirants, total allegiance must be to the party and the national interest.”
On financial matters, the NDC pledged to strengthen accountability mechanisms governing the use of party resources and campaign finances.
“On financial probity, the party will enforce strict accountability in the management of party resources by all officers, and party funds must be used strictly for party business,” the statement said.
The party also directed candidates seeking elective positions to fully disclose funds raised for campaigns, as well as all contributions made to campaign accounts, through designated party channels.
“Monies sourced by candidates at all levels, and contributions made by candidates to campaign accounts, must be fully disclosed to the party at the appropriate levels,” the statement added.
