The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to ratify former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate on Friday, May 29, 2026, after he emerged unopposed for the party’s ticket.
The decision will be taken during the party’s nationwide primaries, which will also produce candidates for governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly elections across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday that preparations were affected by logistical challenges linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.
He explained that Wednesday, May 28, 2026, was set aside for arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, as well as final consultations ahead of the exercise.
Cleopas noted that travel constraints, including limited flight availability, left some aspirants and screening committee members stranded in Abuja after earlier activities.

He stressed that no security agency or government institution, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and INEC, is expected to participate in any May 28 activities, warning that any breach would be considered invalid.
He reaffirmed that the primaries will hold as scheduled on Friday, May 29, 2026, in line with the party’s timetable.
The exercise will begin with the presidential affirmation, followed by National Assembly, State Assembly, and governorship primaries nationwide.
Cleopas added that all results will be collated at the national headquarters and announced by the National Working Committee, stressing that no state structure is authorized to declare outcomes.
He urged aspirants and party officials to maintain order, warning that violence, disruption, or misconduct would not be tolerated.
