NDDC Begins Emergency Power Upgrade To Cut Diesel Use

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has initiated an emergency intervention to improve electricity supply at its headquarters, officially handing over the project to power firm, Income Electrix.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Saturday in Port Harcourt by the commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama. According to the statement, the project aims to connect the NDDC headquarters complex to a bilateral feeder from the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to ensure more stable power.

During the handover ceremony, the Director of Community and Rural Development, Engr. Theophilus Alagoa—represented by the Deputy Director, Mr Olorunlara Olumide—described the initiative as an urgent measure to address power challenges at the facility. He noted that the move would significantly cut down on diesel consumption while guaranteeing a more reliable electricity supply.

He stated, “We are here in respect of an emergency work awarded to Income Electrix to connect the NDDC head office to PHED. This meeting also serves as the formal introduction and handover of the contractor to handle the project.”

Alagoa further urged the contractor to meet expectations and ensure timely communication of any issues encountered during the execution phase.

Details of the project include the construction of a 33KV double-circuit line from the Hypercity Roundabout, installation of a 1.5MVA 33/0.415 distribution substation, and the upgrade of an existing 500KVA 11/0.415KV transformer at the annex to 500KVA 33/0.415KV. It also covers the enhancement of the 33KV feeder switchgear at the supply end.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Administration and Human Resources, Erefa Alalibo, assured that the commission’s monitoring unit would closely supervise the project to ensure compliance with approved standards and specifications.

In response, Income Electrix representative, Mr Umo Adam, pledged that the company would deliver the project in line with agreed terms, emphasising its commitment to quality and timely completion.

Meanwhile, Director II of Corporate Affairs, Dr Tony Omah, highlighted the importance of conducting thorough needs assessments before embarking on projects. He stressed that such evaluations help ensure that interventions remain relevant and impactful, while also calling on beneficiaries to take ownership of projects to guarantee their sustainability.
