NELFUND Raises Alarm Over Fake Student Loan  Registration Portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has raised alarm over a fake student loan registration portal circulating online, warning Nigerians to disregard the fraudulent notice.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Thursday, April 23, the agency cautioned students and the public against falling victim to scammers exploiting its interest-free loan scheme.

“Please ensure you verify all links and rely only on our official channels for accurate information. Remain vigilant against misinformation, fake news, and potential scams,” NELFUND wrote.

The fake notice claims that President Bola Tinubu approved the opening of a new 2026 registration portal due to challenges faced by students.

It also promotes a suspicious link, presented as an official platform for loan applications and cash transfers.

However, NELFUND has dismissed the claim as false, stressing that the link is not affiliated with the agency.

The Fund noted that this is not an isolated case, recalling similar scam attempts in 2025 where fraudsters circulated misleading messages about reopening application portals or offering direct financial payouts.

Established under the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024, the scheme provides interest-free loans covering tuition and monthly upkeep for eligible students.

Repayment is scheduled to begin two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps programme.

NELFUND urged students to remain cautious, verify all information through official channels, and report suspicious messages to prevent further exploitation.
