Judge Frank Caprio, the longtime Providence jurist widely celebrated as the “Nicest Judge in the World,” has died at the age of 88. He passed away on August 20, 2025, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
His death was confirmed in a statement released on his official social media accounts, which noted that he “passed away peacefully” surrounded by family.
Caprio, who served as Chief Municipal Judge in Providence, Rhode Island, gained worldwide recognition through the reality television program Caught in Providence.
The show, which featured real-life cases from his courtroom, went viral for his compassionate and often humorous interactions with defendants. Short clips of his rulings, shared widely across television and social media platforms, earned him a global following and the nickname that defined his public image.
Born on November 24, 1936, in Providence, Rhode Island, Caprio was the son of Italian immigrants.
He built a career in law while also dedicating time to public service and education.
Before becoming a television personality, he served as a lawyer, a city councilman, and later a judge, first appointed in 1985.

His reputation for empathy set him apart in the judicial system, as he often balanced fairness with mercy, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals.

Caprio publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in December 2023, telling followers he was “at peace” with his condition and grateful for the outpouring of support from around the world.
His legacy extends beyond his legal work and television presence, with many remembering him as a symbol of compassion in public service.
