In a gesture marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has granted clemency to six inmates across the state’s correctional facilities.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 1, the governor said the pardons were in recognition of the prisoners’ positive behaviour and demonstrated reform.
“Acting on my constitutional prerogative of mercy and following the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to six individuals who have served various sentences and shown significant good conduct over time,” Fintiri said.

He instructed that the freed inmates be released immediately, urging relevant authorities to implement the directive without delay.
The beneficiaries of the pardon are Wamari Godwin, Abraham Marksunil, David Paul, Ibrahim Adamu, Usman Inuwa, and Sani Yahaya.
Nigeria observes Independence Day every October 1 to celebrate its liberation from British rule in 1960.
Traditionally, the day is marked with national speeches, cultural events, official ceremonies, and community activities.
This year, however, the federal government suspended the customary military parades.
