Nigeria’s football community and the Nigeria Football Federation are anxiously awaiting a decisive ruling from FIFA over a disputed player eligibility case involving Democratic Republic of the Congo, a development that could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup qualification hopes.
The NFF lodged a formal complaint after DR Congo defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles on penalties during the World Cup playoff clash in Morocco, securing a place in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March.
According to the petition, DR Congo allegedly fielded several players who, while cleared by FIFA, still hold dual citizenship — a situation the NFF argues violates Congolese national law, which reportedly requires players to possess only a Congolese passport to represent the country.
