Nigeria emerged as the highest-ranked African nation after finishing seventh on the final medals table as the 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday.
Team Nigeria secured a total of 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze across four sports during the competition.
Athletics accounted for the country’s biggest medal haul, with Samuel Ogazi, Ezekiel Nathaniel and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi making history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals in the men’s 400m, men’s 400m hurdles and men’s shot put respectively. Goodness Nwanchukwu also retained her women’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 title to add another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally.
Silver medals came through Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200m, Ruth Usoro in the women’s long jump and Jessica Oji in the women’s shot put.
Tobi Amusan claimed bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Kayinsola Ajayi finished third in the men’s 100m. Temitope Adeshina secured Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s high jump in more than 70 years after earning bronze. Ella Onojuvwevwo also picked up bronze in the women’s 400m before helping Nigeria to another bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay. The men’s 4x100m relay team was initially awarded silver but was later downgraded to bronze following a review.

Nigeria also boosted its overall medal count through strong performances in para-powerlifting, weightlifting and judo.
Australia ended the Games at the top of the medals standings with 171 medals, including 70 gold, while England finished second with 110 medals. Canada, India, Scotland and New Zealand occupied the remaining positions in the top six.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games featured a reduced format compared to previous editions, with about 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals. By comparison, the Birmingham 2022 Games attracted more than 5,000 athletes and featured 280 medal events.
