Nigeria Hard to Govern for Honest Leaders — Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has said Nigeria remains a challenging country to govern, especially for leaders committed to doing the right thing.

Speaking during a special thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 25, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia, held to mark the second anniversary of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, Obi lamented systemic resistance to good governance and called for prayers for Nigeria’s leaders.

“It is difficult to govern Nigeria, especially when you want to do it right,” Obi said. “Continue to remember the Governor and his team in prayers.

“Do the same for Nigeria; that God should touch the hearts of our leaders to use public money for public good. It is not our money, we are only trustees.”

He praised Governor Otti’s performance, describing it as a refreshing departure from the usual pattern in governance and a model worth replicating.

“We have come to celebrate two years with a difference. People always say they need eight or ten years to make a change, but I have always said that one day can make a difference. In Abia, everyone can see the change, you don’t need the radio or someone to tell you,” he stated.

Addressing lingering questions about his political ambitions, Obi said his focus remains on the country’s development rather than holding power.

“I’m not desperate to be President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. We want future leaders like Governor Otti.”

Responding, Governor Otti attributed his achievements to divine guidance and teamwork.

Quoting 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, he said, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase. We’ve all worked hard, but nothing would have come out of it if God didn’t back us. That’s why we return all thanks to Him.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of the legislature, judiciary, and his administration’s team, describing the progress in Abia as a collective effort.

The Governor expressed gratitude to Obi for his encouragement, describing him as “a shining example of good governance.”

In his sermon, Pastor Enyinnaya Uguru, former President of the Abia North Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, advised leaders not to allow short-term achievements distract them from long-term goals.

He said Governor Otti’s victory in 2023 was divine, following multiple setbacks, adding, “Periods of delay are often periods of preparation.”

Pastor Uguru praised the Governor’s work, saying, “You are doing well. I’m saying this because I have evidence.”

The thanksgiving service was attended by government officials, political leaders, clerics, and citizens from across the state.
