President Bola Tinubu has commended Nigeria’s UN ambassador, Jimoh Ibrahim, following his presentation of the organisation’s proposed 2027 budget at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Ibrahim presented the seven-volume document on Sunday, October 18, 2026, describing the occasion as a milestone in Nigeria’s 66-year UN membership.
As chairman of the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on administrative and budgetary matters, Ibrahim said the development was unprecedented, marking the first time a Nigerian had led the committee and presented the proposed UN budget to a Nigerian president.
The document was submitted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for consideration by member states.

Ibrahim cited approximately $3.4 billion for the regular budget and $8.5 billion for peacekeeping operations, putting total expenditure at about $14 billion. However, the figures do not reconcile.
The proposed 2027 regular programme budget is $3.302 billion, rising to $3.408 billion with specified major construction projects, while peacekeeping has a separate budget.
The proposed allocations remain subject to negotiations and approval by member states.
Ibrahim pledged to strengthen financial accountability and ensure UN spending delivers tangible benefits to member countries.
Elected chairman on June 2, 2026, Ibrahim was congratulated by Tinubu, who expressed confidence in his contribution to the organisation. The Fifth Committee reviews UN financial proposals and recommends budgetary decisions to the General Assembly.
