Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance diplomatic engagement and foster cooperation across key sectors, marking a significant step in bilateral relations between the two nations.
The agreement, signed in Madrid on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, establishes a framework for regular political consultations and deeper collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
According to a joint statement issued by both ministers and released by the Spanish Embassy in Abuja, the MoU aligns with Spain’s Africa Strategy 2025-2028, which prioritizes strengthening partnerships with African nations in economic development, security, education, energy, and climate action.
“During this meeting, both Ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations, establishing a mechanism for regular dialogue to advance areas of mutual interest and consolidate cooperation between Spain and Nigeria,” the statement read.
With Nigeria’s influence in West Africa and Spain’s strategic role within the European Union, the agreement is expected to drive regional stability and economic growth. The ministers also underscored the critical role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in addressing security and developmental challenges in the Sahel and the broader West African region.

Beyond regional cooperation, the ministers also discussed pressing global issues, particularly the crises in Gaza and Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and adherence to international law.
The agreement is expected to enhance trade, security cooperation, and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Spain while fostering stronger Africa-Europe ties. Both ministers hailed the MoU as a pivotal milestone in their countries’ partnership and pledged to continue working closely for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
