Nigeria and the United States have agreed to deepen security cooperation following high-level meetings between Nigerian officials and US counterparts in Washington last week, a press release by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated on November 24, 2025.
The Nigerian delegation, led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, met senior officials from the US Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of War. During the talks, Nigeria rejected allegations of genocide, stressing that violent attacks affect families and communities across religious and ethnic lines and warning that mischaracterisation could divide the nation.
According to the press release, the US expressed readiness to provide enhanced intelligence support, expedite defence equipment requests, and, where available, supply excess defence articles to support operations against terrorists and violent extremist groups.
The US also offered humanitarian assistance to affected populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and technical support to strengthen early-warning mechanisms.
Both countries agreed to implement a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a Joint Working Group to coordinate security efforts and civilian protection. Nigeria, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities.

“The discussions provided an opportunity to correct misconceptions about Nigeria, build mutual trust, and forge a solution-driven partnership with the United States,” the press release noted.
The Nigerian delegation included Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, Attorney General of the Federation; Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police; General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Parker Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence; Ms. Idayat Hassan, Special Adviser to the NSA; and Ambassador Ibrahim Babani, Director of Foreign Relations at the Office of the NSA.
The Federal Government assured citizens that urgent and coordinated steps are being taken to secure the nation amid heightened sensitivities around religious freedom and security.
