Nigerian Army Reaffirms Commitment To Defeating Terrorism, Marks 163rd Anniversary

The Nigerian Army has reiterated its determination to intensify the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality across the country as it commemorates its 163rd anniversary.

The pledge was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 Interdenominational Church Service held on Sunday in Abuja. Oluyede, who was represented by Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the Army’s achievements, honour fallen heroes and recommit to its constitutional responsibility of defending the nation.

He noted that the celebration’s theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” underscores the military’s resolve to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity while earning the trust of Nigerians.

According to him, troops remain actively engaged in counter-terrorism operations, combating insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other security threats across different parts of the country.

Despite the challenges, Oluyede said the Army has recorded significant operational successes, including the elimination of criminal elements, destruction of terrorist hideouts, rescue of kidnapped victims and restoration of peace to affected communities.

He attributed the achievements to the courage, professionalism and dedication of officers and soldiers, as well as the collaboration between the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

Speaking on his leadership philosophy, the Army chief said efforts are being intensified to build a more professional, combat-ready and resilient force capable of addressing emerging security threats.

He added that personnel welfare remains a top priority under the Army’s “Soldier First” initiative, with improvements in accommodation, healthcare, training, education and other welfare programmes.

Oluyede also revealed that the Army has witnessed a major increase in recruitment following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. He assured Nigerians that the new recruits would receive adequate training and equipment to effectively contribute to national security.

The Army chief paid tribute to officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifices as invaluable to the nation’s peace and stability. He also acknowledged the contributions of wounded personnel, veterans and military families for their unwavering support.

Expressing appreciation to President Tinubu and the Federal Government, Oluyede said the Army’s recent operational gains would not have been possible without sustained government support.

He urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity and the success of the Armed Forces, while reaffirming the Army’s commitment to the values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, professionalism and selfless service.

Delivering the sermon, the Director of Chaplaincy (Roman Catholic), Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Anthony Maimagani, described military service as a divine calling that demands courage, justice, humility and sacrifice.

He encouraged officers and soldiers to uphold the dignity of every Nigerian, remain steadfast in the face of security challenges and continue protecting innocent citizens with compassion and integrity.
