South Africa’s hopes of advancing in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ended on Sunday night as they fell 2-1 to Cameroon, sparking waves of social media mockery from Nigerian football fans.
The Indomitable Lions struck first through Tchamadeu J. in the 34th minute, before Kofane C. doubled the lead in the 47th minute.
South Africa’s Makgopa E. pulled one back in the 88th minute, but it was too little, too late.

Nigerian fans quickly took to social media to lampoon South Africa, replacing the team’s nickname “Bafana Bafana” with the playful jab “Banana Banana.”
With the win, Cameroon now sets their sights on a quarter-final clash against host nation Morocco on Friday.
