Nigeria’s Amos Dangut Assumes Office As 14th WAEC Registrar/CEO

Amos Dangut has assumed office as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, several months after his appointment.

Dangut, a Nigerian, formally took over as the 14th Registrar of the Council on October 1, 2026, according to a statement by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

His appointment is for a five-year term running from October 2026 to September 2031. He succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Before his new appointment, Dangut served as WAEC’s Head of National Office in Nigeria, a position he assumed on October 2, 2023, and held until his elevation to the regional position.

The Council, WAEC’s International Governing Board, ratified his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra in March 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, obtained in 1991; a Master of Science in Animal Science, 1994; a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science, 2017; and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning, obtained in 2020.

His career in education began in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a teacher and examiner with WAEC before joining the council in 1998.

Since joining WAEC, Dangut has held several positions across its test development, examination security, branch administration and post-examination departments.

His roles included Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos; Senior Assistant Registrar/Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; Senior Assistant Registrar/Branch Controller in Yola; Deputy Registrar/Controller of the Post Examinations Department; Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office; and Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office.

“He is well-skilled and versatile in Test Development, Test Administration, and Branch and Zonal Office Management. For more than two decades, he has leveraged Information and Communications Technology to innovatively improve processes in Test Development, Post-Test Activities, and test administration,” the statement read in part.

WAEC also highlighted Dangut’s record of service and professional conduct, saying he had consistently demonstrated integrity, transparency and diligence throughout his career.

“Throughout his career, Dangut has demonstrated integrity, transparency, diligence, and a strong commitment to service.

“These qualities were recognised in the commendation he received from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters from 2000 to 2006, and in the Award for Meritorious Service presented by the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his NYSC service.

As Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC; Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, JUPEB; Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB; and Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented WAEC at major education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

The council said Dangut introduced several initiatives aimed at improving the conduct, security and efficiency of examinations during his tenure as Head of National Office.

WAEC said: “During his tenure as Head of National Office, he championed innovations to strengthen examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency.

“These included rolling out Computer-Based WASSCE, serialising question papers, and introducing a Digital Electronic Marking System.

“He also oversaw tools and services such as the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, and Systems for Examination Logistics, Timetable Management, and Monitoring Examiners’ Attendance.”

The council further described Dangut as an experienced academic and researcher with publications in national and international journals and extensive experience presenting papers at conferences.

It said he currently serves as the Regional Representative of the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

WAEC described him as “an astute scholar with publications in both international and national journals.

He has also presented numerous keynote and other papers at international and national conferences/foras.

He is presently the Regional Representative of the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).”
