Nigeria’s IDP Population Hits 3.7m- Doro

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, has disclosed that about 3.7 million Nigerians are presently displaced within the country.

Speaking on Friday, the 13th of February, 2026, during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television, the minister explained that the number represents an estimate rather than a fixed total.

He noted that internal displacement across Nigeria remains fluid, as some individuals are being reintegrated into their communities while fresh cases continue to emerge in various regions.

Despite the shifting figures, Doro stated that a large proportion of those living in designated IDP camps have been captured in official records. He added that authorities maintain access to most of the displaced persons currently accommodated in these camps.

Doro said: “In terms of the figure, you know, it is very difficult just tell you that this number is exact, but it is estimated around 3.7 million. The reason is, this is not a static situation.

“The issue of displacement in our country is a dynamic one. And so there are movements, you are resettling people, others are being added.

“But we have broadly the figure of around 3.7 million, and to those who are in IDP camps at the moment, most of them are documented, and we do have access to most of them that are currently residing in IDP camps.”
