The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has alerted Nigerians to a fraudulent online scheme involving a fake National Identification Number (NIN) correction portal being circulated on social media.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday via its official X account, the commission cautioned citizens against engaging with the purported portal, describing it as a phishing attempt aimed at stealing personal information from unsuspecting users.
According to NIMC, the misleading post falsely claims that individuals can access a free platform to modify or correct their NIN records through links that are not authorized by the commission.
“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the agency stated.
The commission reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and has not been compromised, emphasizing that all citizens’ records are adequately protected from unauthorized access.
NIMC urged members of the public to avoid clicking suspicious links or providing personal details on unofficial websites, stressing that all NIN modifications and updates should be carried out only through approved channels.

The agency advised individuals seeking to correct or update their identity records to use its official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment centres across the country.
It also encouraged Nigerians to verify all information concerning NIN services through the commission’s official communication platforms before taking any action.
The warning comes amid increasing cases of cyber fraud and identity theft, with scammers exploiting digital platforms to deceive people into disclosing sensitive personal information.
NIMC called on the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious messages, websites, or online advertisements offering identity-related services outside the commission’s approved platforms.
