NLC to KEDC: Reinstate Sacked Workers or Face Mass Protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a firm demand for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of nearly 900 workers recently dismissed by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC).

In a strongly worded statement released on the 6th of February 2025, and signed by Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, the labour union also called on all its affiliates in Kaduna State to rise in solidarity by joining the ongoing protest.

Titled “Come Off Your High Horse,” the statement did not hold back in criticizing KEDC’s actions, labeling the mass dismissal a clear violation of due process and redundancy regulations. The NLC warned that attempting to justify the sackings through self-rationalization would not resolve the issue.

“We commend the protesting workers of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for conducting their strike action peacefully, despite repeated acts of provocation by KEDC’s management,” the statement read.

The NLC hailed the affected workers’ resistance, calling it a “heroic struggle against illegality and injustice.” It described the sudden termination of over 900 employees as not only shocking but also utterly unjustifiable.

“We urge the management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to abandon its rigid stance and engage in meaningful dialogue. Reinstating the sacked workers unconditionally will foster industrial harmony and restore essential services,” the statement added.

The union also issued a stern warning if KEDC refuses to reconsider its decision, the crisis could escalate into a broader solidarity action with stronger measures.

“For a start, we are calling on all our affiliates in Kaduna State to join the protest in solidarity,” the NLC declared.
