Tinubu Fires UNN, UNIABUJA VCs in Major Shake-Up

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University) and Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in a sweeping overhaul of federal university leadership.

In a statement by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also dissolved the governing council of Yakubu Gowon University, replacing Maikudi with Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term.

Similarly, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed Acting VC of UNN, replacing Chigbu before his tenure ends on February 14. Both acting VCs are barred from applying for the substantive positions.

The shake-up also affected Pro-Chancellors:

Gen. Ike Nwachukwu was reassigned from UNN to the University of Uyo.

Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo moved from Federal University of Lokoja to UNN.

Senator Joy Emordi was replaced as Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education by Senator Sani Stores.

Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a UNN council member, was named Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Tinubu said the changes were aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s higher education sector through dynamic leadership and accountability. All appointments take immediate effect.
