NNPC Extends Petrol Discount, Insists Initiative Does Not Restore Subsidy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its petrol discount initiative at retail outlets nationwide until October 31, 2026, stressing that the measure is intended to provide temporary relief to Nigerians and does not amount to a restoration of fuel subsidy.

The company disclosed this in a press release issued on Friday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, in Abuja.

The statement follows remarks by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, regarding efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on households and businesses.

NNPC said it introduced the discount on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary but decided to sustain the initiative through the end of October in response to prevailing economic pressures.

The company attributed the recent increase in domestic petrol prices to elevated global crude oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, noting that the situation has increased the cost of transportation, business operations and other daily expenses.

According to NNPC, the discount is designed to offer customers direct relief during the period of heightened global market uncertainty while supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on Nigerians.

However, the company clarified that the initiative applies only to NNPC Retail outlets and does not establish a uniform national pump price or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

It urged Nigerians to disregard interpretations suggesting that the discount represents the reintroduction of fuel subsidy, maintaining that the initiative is a customer-relief measure rather than a change in government petroleum pricing policy.

NNPC also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable product supply, responsible customer service and continued collaboration with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to mitigate the effects of rising fuel prices.

The company added that it would continue to communicate the scope and duration of its customer initiatives clearly to enable Nigerians to make informed purchasing decisions.

The statement was signed by Odeh on October 9, 2026.
