‘No Nigerian Is a Street Urchin,’ Says Peter Obi, Denounces Class-Based Insults

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned recent remarks describing his supporters as “low-class Nigerians” and “street urchins,” emphasizing that his politics is rooted in humanity, dignity, and respect for all citizens.

In a post shared via his official X account on Wednesday, Obi described such characterizations as “deeply unfortunate,” noting that no Nigerian should be looked down upon regardless of social or economic status.

“Lately, I have heard a few people say that those who follow Peter Obi are low-class Nigerians, and some have even gone as far as calling them ‘street urchins’ and people of no value. It is deeply unfortunate that in today’s Nigeria, citizens now look down on fellow citizens in such a degrading manner,” he wrote.

Obi stressed that his political philosophy has never been about aligning with the elite but about identifying with ordinary Nigerians whose struggles and voices are often ignored. “No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” he stated, adding that true leadership involves uplifting the weak rather than mocking them.
