Northern CAN Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue, Peaceful Coexistence, Nation-Building

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern Nigeria has reiterated its resolve to maintain continuous and purposeful engagement with governments at all tiers, traditional rulers, and leaders of other faiths as part of efforts aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence across the region.

The association also restated its commitment to the protection of citizens’ rights and to making meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s overall development.

According to the body, “Such engagement has become increasingly critical against the backdrop of lingering security challenges, rising social tensions, and pockets of mistrust that continue to affect communities across parts of the country, particularly in the North.”

In a statement released on Thursday, the 1st of January, 2025, and signed by its chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, CAN noted that tackling these concerns demands intentional cooperation among major stakeholders, including government officials, traditional institutions, and faith-based organisations.

Hayab emphasised that effective collaboration with state authorities and traditional leaders would strengthen dialogue, rebuild trust among diverse groups, and create lasting structures for peace, understanding, and social stability.

He explained that beyond its spiritual responsibilities, the Church remains dedicated to playing a positive and constructive role in nation-building through interfaith dialogue, grassroots engagement, and civic initiatives aimed at promoting unity and social harmony.

According to him, CAN’s approach would also prioritise justice and fairness, while advocating lawful and inclusive mechanisms for addressing grievances that often spark conflict at the community level.

The Northern CAN chairman added that the defence of Christians’ rights would continue within the wider framework of respect for the rule of law and the fundamental rights of all Nigerians, stressing that peaceful coexistence is essential to national unity and progress.

Hayab expressed confidence that sustained dialogue, accountable leadership, and collective commitment from all stakeholders would enable Nigeria to achieve tangible improvements in peace, security, and national integration in 2026.
