The Ebonyi State Government has acquired three aircraft as it prepares to launch a state-owned airline aimed at improving travel, attracting investors, and boosting the state’s economy.
Governor Francis Nwifuru announced the purchase during his New Year address on Thursday, January 1, 2026, describing it as a strategic initiative rather than a prestige project.
The aircraft are expected to arrive within January 2026 and will form the operational backbone of the proposed Ebonyi Air, intended to improve access to the state for investors, professionals, and residents.
Governor Nwifuru noted that limited air connectivity has long slowed tourism and business growth in Ebonyi.
He said the new airline will ease travel, reduce costs, and create jobs across aviation-linked sectors.

The initiative builds on efforts to develop Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Onueke, as a commercial hub, following runway upgrades and the commencement of scheduled flights by commercial operators in June 2025.
Regulatory approvals and operational frameworks are being finalized to ensure the airline meets aviation standards, though a formal launch date has not yet been announced.
Nwifuru emphasized that the project is central to his administration’s agenda of infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and private sector participation.
