Nigeria’s 17-year-old swimming prodigy, Abduljabar Adama, has etched his name in history after clinching a silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania.
Adama touched the wall in 23.64 seconds—just 0.10 seconds shy of Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who claimed gold with a time of 23.54 seconds. The performance earned him Nigeria’s first-ever medal at the prestigious global competition.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), in a statement issued on Sunday, hailed the teenager’s achievement as a breakthrough moment for the country.
“Abduljabar Adama’s silver medal is a proud moment for Nigeria and for Africa,” said Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC. “His hard work and talent have once again shown that our athletes can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.”
Olopade noted that the commission would continue to provide the structures and support required to nurture rising stars like Adama, stressing that this was “only the beginning of many more international triumphs for Nigerian swimming.”

Adama’s brilliance was evident from the heats, where he posted the second-fastest time overall (23.61 seconds) in a field of 116 swimmers spread across 12 heats.
He went on to dominate his semifinal race with a 23.48 finish before battling hard in the final to secure silver.
This latest triumph adds to his growing list of accolades. Earlier in March, Adama stunned Africa at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where he bagged three gold medals, one bronze, and shattered multiple records, including a new African junior mark in the 50m freestyle.
His success has been described as a turning point for Nigeria’s aquatics programme, raising hopes of more podium finishes on the world stage.
