Police kill six notorious kidnappers, Recover Firearms in Abia–Akwa Ibom Border Operation

Operatives of Abia state police command have killed six suspected kidnappers and recovered firearms in a joint security operation at Ikot Ukpon village, Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

According to intelligence Sources quoted by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, on Sunday, the operation was carried out on Aug. 21, following credible intelligence gathered in connection with the March 4, 2025 kidnapping of the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas along Azumiri road in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia.

Reports also revealed that the March incident led to the killing of ASP Tanko Natip of the Counter Terrorism Unit, Rivers Command, as well as two civilians, Mr Anayo Ukwu and Mr Chidozie Confidence Chijioke, Managing Director of Dozzman Filling Station.

The statement further disclosed that six male suspects were initially arrested during the raid.

Items recovered from their hideout include two AK-47 rifles with breech numbers 03221 and 09022, 57 rounds of live ammunition, six magazines, a locally made pistol, and a bag containing charms and spiritual materials.

The police noted that while operatives were exiting the camp, other gang members ambushed them in a bid to rescue the arrested suspects.

“A gun duel ensued, leading to the neutralisation of the threat. The six suspects, who attempted to escape, sustained bullet wounds and died on their way to the hospital for medical attention.

“Two police operatives also sustained bullet injuries during the shootout and are currently receiving treatment,” the statement read.

The police further disclosed that operatives were still combing the surrounding bush to recover the bodies of other fleeing gang members who escaped with gunshot wounds.

The NPF assured residents that investigation was ongoing to dismantle the network of the kidnapping syndicate across Abia and neighbouring states.
