Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, confirmed the death of Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV student in the College of Health Sciences, who died during a clinical viva examination.
The university said the incident occurred suddenly during the assessment when the student reportedly complained of chest pain before collapsing.
According to a statement by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, Adewole was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students present at the venue.
Emergency medical intervention was promptly administered in an attempt to stabilize him.

Despite the swift response and continued efforts to revive him, he was confirmed dead shortly afterwards.
The university described the development as sudden and deeply distressing, noting that it had sent shockwaves through the academic community.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, speaking on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff and students, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
He also commiserated with Adewole’s colleagues, friends and members of the College of Health Sciences, describing the loss as painful and irreparable, particularly at a critical stage of his medical training.
The university added that it is engaging relevant authorities and the bereaved family to provide necessary support while also working to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
