OAU Mourns as Medical Student Dies in Sleep

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the death of a Part Three medical student of the institution, Timilehin Toromade.

In a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, and obtained on Tuesday, the management said the student was believed to have died in his sleep in the early hours of the day.

According to the statement, Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, may have died after 2 a.m., as one of his roommates reportedly opened the door for another medical student occupying the same building around that time.

The university described the incident as sudden and tragic, noting that Toromade was an 18-year-old Part Three student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery.

In a condolence message, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased, as well as his classmates, colleagues and friends.

Bamire described the death as deeply painful and distressing, saying the entire university community was united in grief over the loss of a young student who had embarked on medical training with the aim of serving humanity.

He said the passing of the student had left a void in the hearts of his peers and all who knew him, adding that the loss of a life filled with promise and potential was a tragedy beyond words.

The management said the university was working closely with relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with established medical procedures.

It also disclosed that support measures were being put in place to assist students and members of the university community affected by the loss, urging students, staff and alumni to remain calm and compassionate during the period of mourning.
