Obasa: Lagos Has Enough Laws to Protect Women, Children

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has restated the Assembly’s commitment to protecting women and children through legislative action.

Obasa made the remarks in a statement released on Thursday, the 31st of July, 2025.

He spoke during the 16th Hijrah Lecture organised by the Assembly. The event carried the theme, “The Muslim Women and Societal Reformation: Balancing Between Islamic Culture and Western Civilization.”

At the lecture, he urged for stronger support systems for Muslim women, citing their vital role in shaping families and communities.

Highlighting the Assembly’s efforts, Obasa said several laws had been passed to safeguard women and children’s rights. He stressed the importance of enforcing these laws.

He said, “In safeguarding and strengthening women’s and children’s rights, several laws enacted by the House of Assembly against domestic and sexual violence including the establishment of sexual violence response desks in all local government areas, the domestication of the Child Rights Act, and the Protection Against Domestic Violence Law (PADVL) 2007, which made Lagos the first state in Nigeria to pass a domestic violence specific law that provides for protection orders (restraining orders) for victims of domestic violence.

“These laws are not mere paperwork, they are shields for our wives, daughters, and children.

“We must enforce them and ensure that women are empowered to carry out their roles in family and society.”
