Ogun Government Says TikToker Mirabel Fabricated Sexual Assault Claim

The Ogun State Ministry of Justice has disclosed that Miss Nsikak Abigail Emem, popularly known as Mirabel, the TikTok user whose sexual assault allegation sparked widespread reactions in February, was found to have raised a false alarm and that the case lacked merit for prosecution.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), made this known in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that investigations by relevant authorities, as well as Mirabel’s own admissions, established that the rape allegation was false and deliberately fabricated.

According to the ministry, the findings showed there was no offender to be apprehended or prosecuted in connection with the allegation and no threat to public safety arising from the narrative initially presented.

Ogungbade explained that after a comprehensive review of the circumstances, it was concluded that the interest of justice would be better served through psycho-social rehabilitation rather than criminal prosecution.

As a result, Mirabel was placed under the care of the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, where she has been receiving rehabilitative support.

The commissioner disclosed that the Ministry of Justice has continued to receive periodic reports on her progress, noting that she has responded positively to rehabilitation and is currently preparing for examinations aimed at furthering her academic pursuits.

Mirabel had earlier alleged in a viral social media post that unidentified persons invaded her residence in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, and sexually assaulted her.

The claim generated public outrage, attracted comments from celebrities and led to donations from concerned members of the public.

However, the allegation later came under scrutiny following reported inconsistencies, including the absence of supporting phone records and a lack of evidence indicating a forced break-in at the residence.

She subsequently presented herself voluntarily at a police station in connection with the widely publicised allegation.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, had confirmed that Mirabel visited the station voluntarily, underwent a comprehensive medical examination and was later released into the care of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Meanwhile, the ministry also provided an update on the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in the Ibogun area of the state, stating that significant progress had been made in bringing the suspects to justice.

According to the commissioner, one suspect, Segun Samuel, was arrested shortly after the incident, while other suspects fled.

He revealed that sustained collaboration between the ministry and the police led to the arrest of the alleged ringleader, Qudus Abiola Yekini, describing the development as a major breakthrough in the case.

While two other suspects remain at large, the ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all those involved are apprehended and prosecuted.

The Ogun State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence and all forms of criminal conduct, including false allegations, warning that offenders would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
