The Ogun State Government has ordered the management of the Ibara Housing Estate Mosque in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, to leave the site within seven days or risk losing the building to demolition.
The order was contained in a quit notice bearing serial number 0049680, dated the 5th of November, 2025, and signed by the General Manager of the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority. The notice asked the mosque community to clear out within a week and warned that the government would not accept responsibility for any losses when the demolition begins.
According to the document, “Sequel to our Notice of Contravention served on you, you are hereby informed to vacate the property within seven days from the date of service of this notice.
“You are advised to remove all valuables within the specified time. Please note that the Authority will not be liable for any loss suffered by you or claim for compensation whatsoever for any removable property damaged or destroyed during the impending demolition of the development. You are warned.”
A government staff member, believed to be from the Planning and Development Permit Authority, reportedly delivered the notice shortly after the Zuhr prayer.
Checks showed that the mosque had never been issued any earlier contravention notice before the quit order surfaced.
Later that same day, a different document titled “Notice of Contravention,” also signed by the General Manager, was dropped at the mosque.
In that paper, the mosque was accused of “change of use from residential to mosque (public) within Ibara GRA” and conducting “suspected development without permission.” The management was told to provide all required planning papers, including a development permit, within 24 hours or return the structure to its original residential form within seven days.

The second document, with serial number 0050629, stated, “It appears that the provisions of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 and the enabling regulations of the State have been contravened in respect thereof.
“If you dispute the contraventions, you are requested to bring all documents in support of your case, including your planning permit, to the undersigned within 24 hours of the service of this notice.
“If you fail to remove the said contravention(s) within seven days from the date of service of this notice, the said contravention shall be demolished after the service of notice of demolition on you/the property.”
Worshippers and residents connected to the mosque are worried about the “sudden and unfair” action, pointing to the fact that the building has stood in the estate for more than two decades without dispute.
