The Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, has arrested a woman identified as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi for allegedly attempting to smuggle a suspected psychoactive substance into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.
The substance was reportedly meant for her son, Dare Sowunmi, an inmate currently on death row at the correctional facility.
The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Odukoya, the woman was apprehended around 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the main entrance of the custodial centre.
He said correctional officers discovered a substance suspected to be “Colos”, a synthetic psychoactive drug, concealed inside a sachet of a popular beverage powder.
“The routine screening procedures at the facility’s main entry point led to the detection of suspicious substances, believed to be the psychoactive synthetic drug commonly known as ‘Colos,’ concealed within a sachet of a popular beverage powder,” Odukoya said.
He added that the package was allegedly being taken to Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row.
Following the discovery, officers detained Mrs Sowunmi and subsequently transferred her to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Commenting on the incident, the Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, praised the officers for maintaining vigilance and adhering to established security procedures.
Adesina reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on the introduction of drugs and other prohibited items into custodial facilities.
“Our custodial facilities exist to ensure public safety, reformation, and rehabilitation. We maintain an absolute zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking or any illegal acts designed to compromise security,” he said.
He warned that individuals who attempt to breach security or introduce contraband into correctional facilities would face legal consequences.
The Ogun Command also urged members of the public to comply with the rules governing visits and other activities within custodial centres, stressing that efforts to compromise the security of the facilities would attract appropriate legal action.
