The traditional rulers of the Ohafia Ancient Kingdom in Abia State have struck down a declaration by a local youth association that barred Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from entering communities in the area, calling the ban unlawful and without constitutional backing.
The decision came after an emergency meeting convened by the Udumeze Ohafia Ancient Kingdom and the Council of Ohafia Monarchs on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, aimed at addressing rising tensions sparked by the youth group’s earlier action.
The Ohafia Youths Association Inc. had previously declared Senator Kalu persona non grata, accusing him of making remarks they described as offensive to the people of Ohafia.
The group warned the senator to avoid entering the kingdom’s communities.
In their statement, the monarchs emphasised that no individual or organisation has the authority to restrict the lawful movement of any Nigerian citizen.
They cited the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees freedom of movement and other fundamental rights.
The traditional leaders noted that allowing the youths’ ban to persist could destabilise the kingdom and undermine communal harmony.
They urged all youth groups and community stakeholders to pursue grievances through legitimate and established channels rather than unilateral public declarations.

The council described the action as inconsistent with the role of customary institutions, which are meant to safeguard peace, unity, and the welfare of the people.
By annulling the ban, the monarchs reaffirmed their commitment to upholding both law and order and the dignity of citizens, including elected officials.
Senator Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, has been a prominent figure in regional politics, and the monarchs’ intervention restores his ability to move freely within the kingdom.
