Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the news as both “unbelievable” and deeply saddening.
In an emotional series of posts on her verified X account, the former Nigerian finance minister revealed that she had only just sent her well-wishes to the former president, unaware of the severity of his condition, when the news of his passing reached her.
“Unbelievable! I did not know just how ill HE President Buhari was and minutes after sending my get well wishes I have just learned that he passed away,” she wrote. “I am so very sad. May the Soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace. My deepest condolences to the entire Buhari family.”
Earlier, Okonjo-Iweala had posted a goodwill message upon learning of the former president’s health condition, praying for a speedy recovery and thanking him for the support he gave during his tenure. She also acknowledged his role in backing her appointment as the first African and first woman to lead the WTO.

The former president passed away in London at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, following a prolonged illness. President Bola Tinubu confirmed the death and directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany the late leader’s remains back to Nigeria. National flags have been ordered at half-mast in honor of the deceased.
President Buhari, who served two terms as a democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023 and previously as a military head of state between 1984 and 1985, leaves behind a legacy defined by strong anti-corruption rhetoric, infrastructural strides, and deeply debated governance choices.
