Okpebholo Vows Resignation if Tinubu Fails to Win Edo in 2027

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo says he will step down from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to win Edo State in the 2027 presidential election, a declaration he made in a video interview that went viral on November 28, 2025.

Okpebholo said the ruling All Progressives Congress faces “no opposition” in the state and insisted that Tinubu enjoys deeper support among Edo voters than he does.

He added that his government’s performance, along with ongoing federal projects, had strengthened the APC’s standing ahead of the next general election.

The governor’s remarks immediately heightened political attention in Edo, as his pledge ties his mandate directly to the outcome of a national presidential race, a rare stance from a sitting governor.

Senior APC figures in the state have since echoed his confidence, describing the 2027 vote in Edo as already leaning strongly toward the President.

Opposition voices, however, have dismissed the vow as political posturing.

They argue that hinging his governorship on a federal election raises concerns about pressure, campaign conduct and the broader democratic environment leading into the polls.

They also question the governor’s projections, noting that previous turnout figures in the state fall far short of the sweeping support he anticipates.

Okpebholo has not clarified whether his vow constitutes a formal commitment, but the statement is expected to shape early political realignments as Edo moves into the buildup for the 2027 elections.
